It is a glycosaminoglycan (GAG), that is, a chain of two simple sugars: N-acetylglucosamine and glucuronic acid. It is a component of the fundamental substance of the skin, a gel present in the dermis and in which collagen and elastin are immersed. Around the age of 30, the skin begins to reduce its production, as well as that of collagen, elastin and other components.
It has a great capacity to bind water and depending on the length of its chain, it has different degrees of Molecular Weight.
High Molecular Weight indicates a long chain: capable of binding large quantities of water, it acts on the surface layer of the skin creating a film with a protective and smoothing effect.
Low Molecular Weight indicates a short chain: it can bind a smaller quantity of water, but has a greater penetration capacity and acts more deeply, hydrating, giving firmness and elasticity, improving the tone of the tissues.

Curiosity
It was discovered in the 1930s in the vitreous humor of the eyes. It was once extracted from the rooster's comb, currently it is produced in the laboratory.
