The other name by which the butcher's broom is known, namely Butcher's Broom, derives from the fact that in ancient times it was used to protect foodstuffs from the raids of mice. Even before, at the time of the ancient Romans, it was planted around the house to protect it from evil spirits.
The toasted seeds were used as a coffee substitute, while the sprouts, with a similar flavor to asparagus but more bitter, are still used today in cooking
